Saturday 26th June: Have a go at litter picking, take a picture and send it to Kick the Plastics Heatons!
Have you noticed that recently people are talking more about the litter in our area? It’s great that Heaton Norris Wombles, Love Heaton Chapel, and Heaton Mersey Village Conservation Group Greenspaces (alongside the residents of Craig Road Estate) are organising regular activity days. These have a fantastic impact on the amount of litter locally.
HMVCG and residents of Craig Road estate meet on the third Saturday of each month and you can find their details here. Heaton Norris Wombles get together every fortnight on a Wednesday and their details are here. Love Heaton Chapel have litter picks on a monthly basis; LHC Litter Pick – Great British Spring Clean | Facebook
If you know of other organised litter picks in the Heatons, please let us know at KickthePlasticsHeatons@gmail.com.
Kick the Plastics is collaboration between Sustainable Living in the Heatons, Heatons WI, and Heatons Post. We’re working to encourage us all to use less plastic, but also to reuse and recycle where we can. But sometimes plastic litter gets left in our streets and open spaces. It will end up in our streams, rivers and seas if we do not collect it, where it damages fish, sea creatures and their habitat.
We’ve seen that many people in the Heatons are doing their own litter picks. The Great British Spring Clean is 28th May-13th June 2021. Why not make a pledge with The Keep Britain Tidy Campaign and add to the movement? We are hoping you will take up the challenge to do a litter pick in your own area especially in the alleys, lanes and back streets that often get ignored.
As an extra, collect litter on Saturday 26th June 2021 and take a photo to celebrate your activity and send to KickthePlasticsHeatons@gmail.com.
There are tips on how to pick litter safely on the Keep Britain Tidy website, as well as disposal once you have collected it. You might like to get your own tool to stop all that bending down, and for extra safety. There are many available on line, or even at your local bargain store.
