Along the River Mersey from Station Road to the Pyramid

A two-hour gentle walk; suitable for dogs and buggies.

  1. Walk down to the river from Station Road, via Vale Rd and turn left towards Stockport on the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT).
  2. Follow the well-surfaced path under the motorway bridge until it eventually emerges near the footbridge by the Pyramid.
  3. Turn left and walk in front of the Pyramid and through the pedestrian tunnel under the roundabout (admire the interesting graffiti).
  4. Where the paths cross, turn left and cross the footbridge over the motorway. Using the three sets of lights cross the two roads and bus lane and turn left.
  5. After crossing the end of Green Lane, go over Didsbury Road at the crossing, and head uphill.
  6. Immediately before the Co-Op (which is opposite St Martin’s church), go down the path to the side — this path will take you along the back of the Mercedes garage where you join a road.
  7. Pass in front of Russell Gardens (retirement housing).
  8. Turn left onto Langham Road and then left again onto Branksome Road.
  9. Turn left immediately after the play area (signed Trans Pennine Trail).
  10. Take the narrow track to the right just before the fences — you should then find yourself walking directly under a pylon.
  11. Walk by the orchard and cross over the wide path and bear left at the picnic bench.
  12. 30m after the picnic bench, take the path on the right that winds up the slope. Follow this, ignoring a narrower path on your right.
  13. Now just keep following this path.
  14. When you join another wide path, turn left.
  15. Keep going until you see the blue railings ahead, and 30m before you reach them bear left. Then in 20m turn sharp right downhill and back onto a wide path and bear right to the TPT.
  16. Follow the TPT downstream back to Vale Rd and Station Rd, where you started.
